Sana'a, NewsYemen, exclusive:

The Houthi group, the Iranian arm in Yemen, has approved a new system for studying at Sana'a University, banning both male and female students from teaching together, in the latest repressive step against educational institutions in the areas under its control.

On Monday, the so-called "University Student Forum," a Houthi entity that has extensive powers in controlling the educational process at Sana'a University, announced the mechanism of the new academic system in the Faculty of Mass Communication.

In an announcement published on its channel in the "Telegram" application, the Al-Multaqa branch of the college revealed a new mechanism for the academic system for the academic year 2023-2024 , which includes specifying days per week for lectures for male students and others for female students.

The forum allocated days: Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, in which lectures are held for students only, and allocating days: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, in which lectures are held for female students only, stressing that this system will be implemented starting from next Saturday, and that the schedule of lectures will be circulated later.

According to academic sources, the Houthi group announced this mechanism through the forum instead of the college or university administration, due to fear of opposition reactions by students or academics at the university.

The sources mentioned the group’s failed experience last year, through the so-called “alumni club,” through which it tried to control the graduation ceremonies of university students and imbue them with its sectarian ideology and project, but the idea was met with a fierce and violent campaign by students and society, which prompted the university to stop the club. About work and interference in graduation ceremonies.

She added that the group's presentation of this step through the forum comes as an attempt to show it that it is a desire emanating from the students, and if it succeeds in imposing this in the College of Information, it will work to apply this system later on the rest of the university's colleges and the rest of the public universities in its areas of control.

This comes in light of the low turnout that public universities suffer from by high school graduates in areas controlled by the Houthi group, the latest of which was revealed by Reuters correspondent, journalist Mohammed al-Ghubari, quoting a professor at Dhamar University about the level of turnout in university faculties.

According to the professor at Dhamar University, the number of students enrolled in the College of Education with its ten departments (17), the College of Arts with its eight departments (9), the College of Applied Sciences with its six departments (2), and the College of Agriculture with its agricultural and veterinary departments (17).
