Abyan, newsyemen, private:

Al-Qaeda in Yemen has increased the pace of its terrorist attacks against the southern forces participating in the process of securing the areas of Abyan governorate, in the south of the country, in light of the ferocity of the war between the two parties since late last year.

The focus of the terrorist attacks focused on the forces stationed in the Mudiya district and Wadi Omran, which for years was a major stronghold of the organization in Abyan, and was cleared by the southern forces as part of Siham Al-Sharq Operation "Arrows of the East", which was launched late last year.

Since the beginning of 2023, the organization has launched about 40 terrorist operations, targeting movements and military vehicles of the forces participating in the war against terrorism in the regions of Abyan and Shabwa Governorate. Those treacherous attacks, which were carried out through improvised explosive devices or drones, resulted in the killing and wounding of more than 100 members of the southern forces, including officers and field commanders.

The ferocity of the attacks.. a raging confrontation

Al-Qaeda in Yemen resorted to the war of booby-traps in the governorates of Abyan and Shabwa, to defend its main strongholds in southern Yemen, which are the last strongholds in which it has been entrenched for years in light of laxity and the failure to launch serious security and military campaigns to secure them.

The organization chose most of its terrorist attacks in the Mudiyah district and Wadi Omran in Abyan governorate, and "Al-Musina'a" in Shabwa governorate, as these areas witnessed, during the month of June, about 15 targeting and attack operations. These attacks resulted in the killing and wounding of 25 soldiers.

The head of the Eighth Day Foundation for Media and Studies, Saleh Abu Awdal, confirmed in his statement to "NewsYemen" that the concentration of terrorist attacks in Wadi Omran, the cavalry in Abyan, and Al-Musina'a in Shabwa has strategic dimensions in the war on terrorism, especially since those areas were strongholds and safe havens for the movement of terrorist organizations.

He made it clear that there are supply lines linking the organization with the command center in Marib or Al-Bayda and Yakla in Rada, not to mention the existence of a hot supply line with the Houthi militia, which feeds the organization with camouflaged explosive devices that are remanufactured by experts who we believe are Iranian. These devices were used by the Houthis in more than one place, and their first appearance was in the battles on the western coast to stop the joint forces on the western coast from advancing to liberate Hodeidah.

The insistence of the southern forces

Since the beginning of July, terrorist elements have carried out several attacks in Mudiyah, Abyan Governorate, and Musina'a, in Shabwa. These attacks resulted in the killing and wounding of more than 15 soldiers. The last of these attacks was on July 12, after the detonation of an explosive device targeting a military vehicle carrying soldiers in the "Kawkab" area, east of Mudiya. The attack resulted in the death of one soldier and the wounding of 3 others.

The war of booby-traps and targets pursued by terrorist elements was matched by the strong insistence of the southern forces stationed in Abyan and Shabwa as part of Operation Arrows of the East and Arrows of the South. Where the southern forces in Mudiya launched extensive tracking and combing campaigns on the main and secondary roads to confront terrorist booby-trapping operations.

A source in the security belt forces - Mudiya sector told "NewsYemen" that the forces prepared a periodic combing plan for the main and secondary roads through which the "East Arrows" forces pass, and the forces were able to seize two explosive devices, which were intended to detonate and target military vehicles belonging to the southern forces on the road. General east Mudia.

The source said that explosives experts were able to recover the two homemade explosive devices near the "Qarn Ashal" area. He pointed out that the first package contained barrels and the other solid high explosive materials, and the slogan of "Ansar al-Sharia" - one of the local armed factions affiliated with al-Qaeda in Yemen - was written on the two packages.

According to the source, the routine patrols are continuing in order to secure the general line east of Mudiya and thwart any terrorist attacks, explaining that there is a determination among the southern forces to confront the booby-trapped war, which represents the last means for al-Qaeda, which is witnessing a major collapse after the painful blows it received during the tracking and cleansing campaigns, which It is carried out by the southern forces as part of Operation Arrows of the East.

Confusion and exhaustion

A state of confusion experienced by the terrorist organization in light of the harassment and purification and tracking campaigns carried out by the southern forces in neighboring Abyan and Shabwa, and the movements of al-Qaeda elements and their operations have become exposed and exposed.

In the Al-Mahfad district of Abyan governorate, the southern forces were able, a few days ago, to thwart a terrorist attack by members of the terrorist Al-Qaeda organization on the outskirts of Wadi Al-Khayala, on the outskirts of the district.

A source in the 1st Brigade, Support and Support, said: “After we monitored a gathering of al-Qaeda terrorists on the outskirts of Wadi al-Khayala, our forces bombed their gathering with mortar shells. The bombing achieved painful strikes, as a result of which there were deaths and injuries among the ranks of the terrorist organization

The source confirmed that the brigade's forces intensified their shelling before the elements of the terrorist organization carried out the attack, so that the attack was thwarted and the attacking elements were confronted before they reached the positions of our forces.

Analysts and experts specializing in the affairs of the terrorist group in Yemen pointed out that Al-Qaeda has become in a state of confusion and exhaustion as a result of the insistence of the southern forces to complete the full objectives of the “Siham Al-Sharq” operations in Abyan, and “Siham Al-Janoub” in Shabwa, explaining that the booby-trapped war is the last hope for the terrorist elements is to highlight their presence specifically in the two governorates, after eliminating outposts and locations that they used as main strongholds over many years.

And the head of the Eighth Day Foundation for Media and Studies, Saleh Abu Awdhel, confirms in his statement to "NewsYemen" that the war against al-Qaeda is different from any other place. Abyan fell in the year 2011, and caused the displacement of thousands of residents from their homes, not to mention that civilians were subjected to terrorist attacks that claimed dozens of lives, including the 2009 massacre, explaining that combating terrorism in the south is completely different, because those who resist the extremist organization are civilians affected by terrorist attacks.

Big losses for the organization

Never before has any military campaign been able to deliver strong and severe blows to al-Qaeda in Yemen, as is the case now in Abyan and Shabwa, led by the southern forces and Shabwa Defense. Within a few months, the forces were able to clear major strongholds, and hit training camps and caches of weapons and explosives that had been protected for many years. In addition, the extensive security campaigns to track down al-Qaeda cells managed to eliminate many of the organization's elements, including prominent field leaders.

According to statistics and security sources, the number of al-Qaeda dead during the campaigns to purify and secure the strongholds of the organization in Shabwa and Abyan has reached more than 20 members. In addition to dozens of injured people who were killed in battles and clashes with the southern forces.

Many of the names of those who were killed appeared in media testimony and publications issued by the terrorist organization itself, including the two field leaders, "Musab Al-Jaadani" and "Nasser Ali Salah Al-Jaadani", who were killed in Abyan Governorate, as well as Abu Muhammad Al-Shalwani Al-Awlaki, who was killed in Shabwa Governorate.

The organization also acknowledged the death of prominent leaders, including "Hamad bin Hamoud al-Tamimi," the Sharia official of al-Qaeda, and Hamad al-Tamimi, who heads the Shura Council in the organization and a Sharia judge, in addition to the death of the leader, Hassan al-Hadrami, responsible for manufacturing explosive devices and explosives.

Al-Qaeda admitted, during the period from January 1 to June 30, 2023, the killing of more than 12 leaders, including the legal official of the organization, Hamad Al-Tamimi.

Al-Qaeda-affiliated media pages also published news of obituaries and condolences for leaders killed by the southern forces or by raids carried out by an American drone. The most prominent of these elements are Nasr al-Hamiqani, Munther al-Ta'izzi, "Abd al-Rahman Nasser al-Khalidi", Muwahid al-Hadrami, Zaki al-Abbi, Abu Nasser al-Hadrami, Mishaal al-Usaimi, aka Abu al-Khair al-Najdi, and Abu Azzam al-Halaki, called "Muhammad Salih Bakrmoum al-Halaki."

These heavy losses in the ranks of the organization were influential and broke the organization's back in Yemen, according to what was reported by a number of researchers in the affairs of the terrorist group in Yemen.

During the recent security campaigns, the southern forces were able to dismantle networks of mines and explosive devices, as well as raid dens and hideouts that were used by terrorist elements to manage terrorist operations in Shabwa and Abyan.

The head of the Eighth Day Foundation, Saleh Abu Awdhel, indicates that the war strategy in Abyan and Shabwa needs to convince the Arab and international coalition of the importance of combating terrorism and providing the necessary support to the southern forces to complete their tasks and goals in eliminating these organizations.

He pointed out that the operations carried out by the southern armed forces come with the support of the United Arab Emirates, the global partner in the fight against terrorism, but there is a complete absence of any Saudi role like this, although Riyadh leads an Islamic coalition to fight terrorism, but its role is in combating terrorist organizations in the south. shrouded in mystery.

He explained that the military strategy and joint coordination between the southern forces and the UAE armed forces is a very successful, a strategy that started from Mansoura in the capital, Aden, in late 2015, and this strategy continued until the coast of Hadhramaut and Shabwa were liberated and the organization was expelled from its most important strongholds in the Arabian Peninsula.
