Mukalla, NewsYemen:

In a meeting of the UN Security Council, the United Arab Emirates called on the Houthi militia - Iran's arm in Yemen - to stop exploiting the revenues of the port of Hodeidah in favor of financing its war effort.

The UAE's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Muhammad Abu Shihab, said that the revenues of the port of Hodeidah should be directed to the benefit of the delayed salaries of employees in Yemen in accordance with the Stockholm Agreement signed between the parties to the conflict in December 2018, instead of using it as a war effort.

In the UN Security Council meeting on Yemen, the Emirati diplomat called on the Houthis to fully comply with the decision to renew the mandate of the UN mission and to remove all obstacles and restrictions imposed on the mission's freedom of movement, including allowing it to conduct unannounced patrols of the ports without hindrance.

Abu Shihab called on the Security Council and the international community to play their role in pressuring the Houthis to stop the military escalation on the fronts, and to refrain from any attempts to re-ignite the war, pointing out that any escalation or indication in this direction is a source of great concern, especially given the Houthis' continued build-up of their arsenal. war since the beginning of the armistice, through smuggling operations, in flagrant violation of Resolution 2216.

The Emirati official praised the recognized Yemeni government's commitment to restraint towards the ongoing Houthi escalation, stressing the importance of accelerating an agreement that includes a permanent ceasefire, with the need for it to be accompanied by a series of confidence-building measures, including opening roads, unifying the economy, disbursing salaries and exchanging prisoners.

He stressed that this agreement will form the necessary basis for starting a political dialogue between the Yemeni parties, to reach a comprehensive and sustainable political solution.
